What Is The Water Of Life?
The Holy Bible is the book which leads us to the One who comes to give us salvation. For this reason Jesus, who was the Savior 2000 years ago, said that the bible was the book that testified about him. (John 5:39) Those who believed in the words of God in the bible accepted Jesus and could receive salvation. However, those who did not believe in the bible rejected him and lost their salvation. Therefore, as believers of God and the bible, we should also have the spiritual eyes to recognize the Savior who would appear to us for the second time. (Hebrews 9:28) Today, let us find out how to recognize the Savior by studying “the water of life”. What is the water of life?
Water Of Life God Gives Us
What Is The Water Of Life?–The bible expresses the salvation of God in many different ways. Sometimes, it is called “the glory of God” (Isaiah 40:5), “hidden manna” or the bread from heaven that gives life, “the promise of God”, “the light of life”, etc. What is most commonly used for the salvation of God is, however, through the water of life.
Throughout the bible, God figuratively compares the water as redemption and salvation.
Isaiah 40:19 I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland. …. because I provide water in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland, to give drink to my people, my chosen, the people I formed for myself that they may proclaim my praise.
Psalm 23:1 The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing. 2 He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, 3 he refreshes my soul.
Revelation 7:17 For the Lamb at the center of the throne will be their shepherd; ‘he will lead them to springs of living water.’ ‘And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.’”
Water of Life, Eternal Life
What Is The Water Of Life?–Then what is this water God would give us? Let us first think about our physical life. There are many things we need to sustain our physical life on this earth such as food, air, house, clothes, etc. Most of all, what is most important for our life is probably “water”. For this reason, if we lose about 2% of water from our body, we feel an extreme thrist; with about 12% of the loss of water, we can die.
Actually, the human body itself is composed mostly of water. About 97% of our body is made up of water. In this sense, it would not be an exaggeration if we say that water is life. Through this physical water that enables the physical life, God is teaching us the spiritual meaning behind it. That is, to have spiritual life or eternal life, we must drink constantly from the water of life. Therefore, in this figurative usage of water, we should realize the importance of “the water of life”. And also we must know the source of the water of life.
Water Cleansing Us Of Our Sins and Impurities
What Is The Water Of Life?–Let us find out the meaning and role of the water of life through some verses from the bible. First the bible teaches us that the water of life gives us the cleanseness from our sins and impurities.
Zechariah 13:1 “On that day a fountain will be opened to the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, to cleanse them from sin and impurity.
Ephesian 5:25 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her 26 to make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word
The bible says that we lost our eternal life because of sin and impurities. (Romans 6:23) Then what would happen to us if our sins and impurities get washed away? With the sins washed, we will be pure and clean again. And the death penalty would be taken away from us too. It means the eternal life will be restored to us.
Water Giving Eternal Life
What Is The Water Of Life?–Also, the bible directly teaches that we can have eternal life through the water of life.
Zechariah 14:8 On that day living water will flow out from Jerusalem, half of it east to the Dead Sea and half of it west to the Mediterranean Sea, in summer and in winter.
What is this living water coming from Jerusalem? And what kind of power does it have?
Ezekiel 47:1 The man brought me back to the entrance to the temple (Jerusalem Temple), and I saw water coming out from under the threshold of the temple toward the east (for the temple faced east). ….8 He said to me, “This water flows toward the eastern region and goes down into the Arabah, where it enters the Dead Sea. When it empties into the sea, the salty water there becomes fresh. 9 Swarms of living creatures will live wherever the river flows. There will be large numbers of fish, because this water flows there and makes the salt water fresh; so where the river flows everything will live.
These are the prophecies of the living water which flows out from Jerusalem (Temple) and gives life to the Dead Sea. As we can see through these prophecies, the water of life has power to give life to people. We can confirm this through the teaching of Jesus. Jesus, who was the reality of the temple, gave people the water of life 2000 years ago.
John 4:13 Jesus answered, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, 14 but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”
Jesus more directly taught us that the water of life means “eternal life” or salvation. Therefore, whoever wants to receive the salvation of eternal life must drink from this water of life.
What Is The Water Of Life?–Throughout the bible God teaches us that we must drink from this water of life. Now we come to know what the water of life is. The water of life represents eternal life and salvation. Therefore, those who dream about the salvation of God must drink this water of life.
At this moment, there is one important question we have to ask: who is the source of the water of life? Our life on this earth is compared to the life in the desert. Spiritually, we are living in the desert and desperately searching for the water that can satisfy our thirst and give us life. If we do not know the source of the water, however, how can we drink from the well of the living water. We must know the place where we can get the water and we must travel to the place.
In the same way, now we come to realize the importance of the living water. But what use would it be to us if we do not know where to go for the water of life? In the next article, I would like to show more about the source of the water of life.
