God’s Heir Through God the Mother
As we have seen in the previous article, Abraham represents God himself and thus the heir or children of Abraham signify God’s heir or children. Therefore, by studying the family history of Abraham, we can know who can enter the kingdom of heaven and why?
According to the bible, there were three candidates for the heir of Abraham: Eliezer, Ishmael, and Isaac. Through Abraham’s family, God teaches that He chooses God’s heir through God the Mother. Let us look at one by one and find out the conditions to be the heir of Abraham.
Eliezer, the First Candidate
Abraham first received the commands of God at the age of 75 and he obeyed God with all his heart. Abraham received many blessings from God because of his obedience to the words of God. Even though he was prosperous and rich under the grace of God, Abraham had one concern, that is, about his heir.
Until he was late in age, Abraham had no heir who can receive his inheritance. Since he had no children, he wanted to set Eliezer a faithful servant as heir.
Genesis 15:2 But Abram said, “Sovereign Lord, what can you give me since I remain childless and the one who will inherit my estate is Eliezer of Damascus?” 3 And Abram said, “You have given me no children; so a servant in my household will be my heir.” 4 Then the word of the Lord came to him: “This man will not be your heir, but a son who is your own flesh and blood will be your heir.”
However, God suggested a condition to become the heir of Abraham. That is, the heir must be the son of Abraham himself receiving his own flesh and blood. For this reason, Eliezer could not become the heir of Abraham.
Ishmael, the Second Candidate
Since Sarah the wife of Abraham was childless, Sarah gave Hagar her Egyptian slave to Abraham to have an heir in the family. That was when Abraham was 85 years old, and finally a year later Abraham could have a son through Hagar and named him Ishmael. Since he now had a son with his own flesh and blood, Abraham asked God to bless Ishmael as heir.
Genesis 17:18 And Abraham said to God, “If only Ishmael might live under your blessing!” 19 Then God said, “Yes, but your wife Sarah will bear you a son, and you will call him Isaac. I will establish my covenant with him as an everlasting covenant for his descendants after him.
However, God put forward a second condition that the heir must be born from Sarah the legitimate wife of Abraham. Even before his birth, God name the heir as Isaac and he promised that he would make his covenant with the son of Sarah.
Primogeniture, the Right of the Firstborn
In the old days, there was a law called “primogeniture” which legitimize the firstborns for the inheritance of the household estate. This was a customary practice also in the bible. The firstborn usually had the right to inherit the estate of the family and even the titles and positions given to the family. According to this ancient law, the firstborn in Abraham’s side was Ishmael and he had every right for the inheritance.
However, this law was overridden by the command of God, who denied the inheritance of Ishmael. God chose Isaac as heir of Abraham and gave his covenant and blessings to Isaac. Finally, when Abraham was 100 years old, Isaac was born to him and he received all the inheritance of Abraham as his heir.
Isaac Chosen as Heir of Abraham
As I told you before, this family history can be read as parable which contains secrets of the kingdom of heaven. Through Abraham’s family, God is actually teaching about the heirs of God who will receive the kingdom of heaven as eternal inheritance. Therefore, we have to know the reason why Ishmael, who was the firstborn of Abraham, was denied and Isaac was chosen even though he was a younger one.
Sarah, Mother of Isaac
In choosing the heir of Abraham, the standard God used was not Abraham, but Sarah. Ishmael was the firstborn son on the side of Abraham. However, he could not receive the lawful inheritance as the heir of Abraham. Isaac, on the other hand, was the firstborn son on the side of Sarah. And as such he could receive the heirship of Abraham. Through this we can see the standard used to decide the firstborn was not Abraham, but Sarah the mother of Isaac.
Spiritual Meaning Hidden in This Parable
Eliezer, Ishmael, Isaac
Now let us make a short summary about the three candidates for the heir of Abraham.
|Father Abraham (Free)||Mother Sarah (Free)||Result (Heir)|
|Eliezer||X (slave)||X (slave)||X|
|Ishmael||O (free)||X (slave)||X|
|Isaac||O (free)||O (free)||O|
As we can see from the table, the first candidate Eliezer could not be the heir because he was a slave born from parents who were slaves in the family. Ishmael the second candidate could not become the heir because of his mother who was slave in the family. Finally, Isaac who was born from Abraham who was free and Sarah who was also free could receive the inheritance as heir. For this reason, the bible teaches that heirs of God should be like Isaac and they must have Father and Mother who are free to receive the eternal inheritance of God in heaven.
Children of Promise Like Isaac
The bible teaches that the children of God must be the children of promise like Isaac, who was born from free parents.
Galatians 4:28 Now you, brothers and sisters, like Isaac, are children of promise. 29 At that time the son born according to the flesh persecuted the son born by the power of the Spirit. It is the same now. 30 But what does Scripture say? “Get rid of the slave woman and her son, for the slave woman’s son will never share in the inheritance with the free woman’s son.” 31 Therefore, brothers and sisters, we are not children of the slave woman, but of the free woman.
The bible teaches that the reason Ishmael was rejected being the heir was because of his mother who was a slave in the family. However, Isaac could receive the inheritance because his mother Sarah who was a free woman.
God’s Heir Through God the Mother
Then who can become the children of God according to the teaching of God hidden in the family history of Abraham? To be the heir of God he must be the child of free father and free mother. What is the spiritual meaning behind it? Spiritually, “freedom” means freedom from the slavery of sin and death.
John 8:33 They answered him, “We are Abraham’s descendants and have never been slaves of anyone. How can you say that we shall be set free?” 34 Jesus replied, “Very truly I tell you, everyone who sins is a slave to sin. 35 Now a slave has no permanent place in the family, but a son belongs to it forever.
Jesus teaches that one must be free from sin and death to be a son of God who can inherit the heaven as heir of God. So here, we can know the spiritual meaning of “freedom” in the bible. “free” means “free from sins and death”. Then in this world who is the only one who is free from sin and death? Isn’t it only God?
Then what does it mean that God’s heir must have a free father and free mother? Spiritually, a Father who is free is God the Father himself. Then who is a free mother? Since the only free one is God, she must be God, too. Therefore, we must call her God the Mother.
God the Father and God the Mother
We already know we have God the Father and believe that He is our Father who can make us sons of God by setting us free from sins and death. However, the bible says this is not complete enough to be the sons of God. The bible says that we have to have God the Mother who set us free from sins and death as free woman.
Galatians 4:26 But the Jerusalem that is above is free, and she is our mother.
“above” means in Heaven. This means that there is Jerusalem in heaven and that heavenly Jerusalem is our spiritual Mother or God the Mother. And through her we can be children of promise like Isaac and we can receive the eternal inheritance of God as God’s heir.
There are many people in this world. According to the bible all those people can be divided into three groups: people like Eliezer, people like Ishmael, and finally people like Isaac.
Those like Eliezer are people who do believe in neither God the Father nor God the Mother, and they are not free from sins and death. As slave to the sins and death, they cannot receive the eternal inheritance of the kingdom of heaven.
Those like Ishmael are people who believe in God the Father, but who do not receive God the Mother the spiritual Sarah. And they also are still under the slavery of sins and death and cannot be the heirs of God.
Finally, people like Isaac are those who accept both God the Father and God the Mother. They could be set free from the slavery and enter eternal heaven as heir of God. This is why they are called “children of promise like Isaac”.
God’s Heir Through God the Mother
Using Abraham’s family history as parable, God is teaching what we should do to be the heirs of God. God clearly shows us that we must receive God the Father and God the Mother in this last day. To fulfill the prophecies of the bible, God appeared to us as the Spirit and Bride (Father and Mother) to give us the water of life, eternal life. And they made us to be the children of God who can inherit the kingdom of heaven. Let us have faith in God the Mother and follow Mother to the end.
